There is a lot of discussion in the technology industry, or in any business that uses software, about the cloud and what it implies for the future of installed software. Installed software is becoming more and more outdated with the advent of cloud technology. “The cloud” can be broken into two distinct parts: cloud applications (aka software as a service, or Saas) and cloud storage (remote servers).

Cloud Applications

Applications that run in the cloud have several advantages to traditional software:

1. Updated automatically: Cloud applications, especially those that run in the browser, are updated automatically by the company that manages them. This means no compatibility issues for the user.

2. No installation: There is no software to install with cloud applications that run in-browser. This is most important when it comes to document sharing. Getting someone involved in a project with installed software means getting them to install the software, which could lead to cost issues in addition to the inherent hassle of installing new software.

3. Responsive customer service: While installed software does contain some help features, cloud application are incentivized to reach out to clients with problems because they are subscribing to the service on a consistent basis.

Cloud Storage

The cloud is becoming an increasingly viable option for file storage. In many cases, remote cloud servers are verified and secured, with options for backup and file recovery available. There are also some distinct differences that make cloud storage superior to on-premise servers:

1. No running costs: With on-premise servers, IT staff will have to maintain and connect machines on a fairly regular basis. Servers also use a large amount of electrical power, which can quickly increase running costs. Cloud services maintain the servers on the users’ behalf and are always utilizing the newest server technology as part of their business model.

2. Easily Accessible: Setting up an intranet or network for an on-premise server can be complicated and hard to get new people onto. With cloud storage, it’s easy to connect anyone at any given point since it’s remotely accessible.
